My husband and I started looking for property in the Upper Kittitas Valley back in 1998. We were tired of the horrible traffic, the pollution, the explosion of condos and houses, and ALL the noise. Our dream was to find a parcel of three acres or more, with power and water, in the woods, preferably with a creek on it and the capability to walk off our property and hike for miles in the woods AND we wanted it to be a quick hour (more or less) from our home in Renton. We soon found it and spent every weekend we could up at "the property"! Always the Monday after when I had the task of doing laundry, I would pick up a piece of clothing, bury my face in it and deeply inhale the smell of wood smoke and wish I was back up in the woods. There was such a huge difference in the life style, people we didn't know would wave at us as we drove down the road (and they used all four fingers!) and people actually took the time to talk with us and helped us out in many ways, there was a real sense of community. We would leave the drizzly Puget Sound area and once we were over the mountains, we were either in the warm sunshine or beautiful snow. We LOVED it! We had discussed making the move over the mountains and building a home, even though it would mean a longer commute... the final decision came one Sunday evening when we were getting back on the freeway to go back to Renton, our dog was in the back seat, she laid her head over the seat looking out the back of the car and started moaning! We started laughing and decided she was telling us what we already knew! We didn't want to leave either, we belonged in Upper Kittitas Valley! Soon after we sold our Renton home and began building our home in the woods where we live now. My husband still works on the other side and it takes him 75 minutes to get to work (which he says is well worth it!). We now enjoy hiking, biking, mushrooming (morels and chantrells), snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and riding our quads... all from our front door! Life is GOOD!
